Dyslexia

Dyslexia is a specific learning difficulty that affects the individual's ability to develop age and ability appropriate skills involving key skills like reading, writing and spelling. The condition can exist in children and adults irrespective of their general intelligence.

There might be a difficulty with short-term auditory memory and the individual might quickly forget what they have been asked to do. They may also work much more slowly than others.

The dyslexic person might have difficulty processing sounds and a tendency to make surprising sequencing sound errors so that words come about 'jumbled'.

When reading they may have difficulty decoding (sounding out) some quite ordinary words and their reading might be slow and stilted. They might need to re-read passages several times before the meaning becomes clear. They may actively avoid having to read and write. For an adult form filling can be challenging.

The dyslexic person may be assumed to have poor concentration and to be easily distracted or absent-minded. There are many indicators of a possibly dyslexia pattern of difficulties and if these are noted in a child or adult then they might need to be assessed.

If an individual is dyslexic it is important to know whether the condition is mild or more severe. This is important as the level of severity dictates the degree of support they will need. Support might be needed in the examination situation and/or in the classroom or workplace.

Assessing for Dyslexia

We have many years experience assessing children and adults with specific learning difficulties. A range of tests will be used such as:

    • The Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children – Fourth Edition (WISC IV
    • The Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale – Fourth Edition (WAIS-IV)
    • The British Ability Scales – Second Edition (BAS-II)
    • The Wechsler Individual Achievement Test –Second Edition (WIAT-II)
    • Comprehensive Test of Phonological Processing (CTOPP)

Prior to carrying out the assessment you will be asked for background information. In the case of a child this will involve school and any other professional reports. You will also be asked to complete a pre-assessment questionnaire designed to elicit background information.

Recommendations will be made for support in school or the workplace.
